From Bullied Kid to TIME Magazine

By the time Tyler Gordon was five years old, he had already endured things no child should face. Diagnosed as partially deaf as a toddler, he underwent surgery that restored some hearing but left him unable to fully keep pace with his peers. The vitamin D deficiency that accompanied his condition put him in a wheelchair for two years. Then the bullying started. A stuttering, partly deaf kid in a San Jose elementary school, Tyler found himself profoundly isolated — until, around age ten, he picked up a paintbrush.

His first portrait was rough. But the second one was better. And the one after that was something else entirely. Self-taught, working from photographs and his own observations, Tyler developed a technique rooted in photorealism that conveyed not just likeness but something deeper — an emotional attentiveness, a genuine interest in the humanity of his subjects. He painted the faces of people who had inspired him: civil rights leaders, athletes, artists, neighbors. He painted Drake. He painted Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther, whose image Tyler rendered with a reverence that felt, even in the brush strokes, like mourning.

By age thirteen, the work had traveled far beyond his bedroom studio. Tyler was posting time-lapses on social media, and the videos went viral with a speed that caught everyone, including Tyler, off guard. The Bay Area press found him first: NBC Bay Area ran a piece that brought him to a wider audience. Time for Kids featured him. He was commissioned to paint LeBron James for TIME Magazine's 2020 Athlete of the Year cover — a commission that would have tested a veteran illustrator, handed to a thirteen-year-old.

"Art was the one place where the bullying couldn't follow me. The canvas didn't care about my stutter. It just waited." — Tyler Gordon

In November 2020, watching election results from his home in San Jose, Tyler began painting a portrait of Kamala Harris — Vice President-elect of the United States, the first woman and first person of Black and South Asian descent to hold the office. He posted a time-lapse video of the process. The tweet went viral: over 15,000 retweets, more than 50,000 likes in days. Kamala Harris saw it. Her office reached out, and a few days later, Tyler Gordon — still fourteen years old — received a personal phone call from the Vice President-elect of the United States, who thanked him for the portrait.

That phone call made global news. But what the headlines inevitably undersold was the quality of the painting itself: a portrait of striking technical accomplishment, capturing Harris's expression with a subtlety of light and shadow that even seasoned portrait artists would acknowledge. Tyler had done it freehand, without tracing, without digital assistance — just the eye, the hand, and whatever innate understanding of form he had been quietly developing since he first reached for that brush at ten.

In 2021, Tyler released his first portrait book, We Can: Portraits of Power, illustrated with his celebrity and civil rights portraits. He paired the book launch with an NFT release, demonstrating a commercial fluency that surprised observers used to thinking of young artists as unworldly. His work appeared in a solo show at Tribeca in New York. Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Kevin Durant, and Essence magazine all recognized him publicly.

"I want kids who are different to know that whatever makes you different can also be your superpower." — Tyler Gordon

Tyler Gordon won the Global Child Prodigy Award, placing him among the most recognized young achievers in the world. His advocacy work — speaking on bullying prevention, disability, and the arts — has become as central to his public identity as the painting itself. He is, in the most literal sense, an artist who used creativity to save himself. That the result also moved the world was a bonus.

Why This Matters

Tyler Gordon's story is about resilience as much as talent. He is a partially deaf, formerly wheelchair-bound child from a Bay Area school where he was bullied — who taught himself to paint by watching, practicing, and refusing to stop. His work gained access to the most powerful people in America not through privilege or networking but through sheer visible quality. When the Vice President of the United States calls a fourteen-year-old to thank him for a portrait, it is because the portrait earned that call. Tyler Gordon shows what is possible when a child finds the one place where the world cannot dismiss them.
