Sergey Mikhailovich Brin was born on August 21, 1973, in Moscow, in the Soviet Union, into a Jewish family whose intellectual credentials were not in question but whose opportunities were systematically constrained by the state's anti-Semitic admissions policies. His father Mikhail was a mathematics professor who had been denied a place in Moscow State University's physics program because of his ethnicity and had instead settled for geography. His mother Eugenia worked as a researcher at the Soviet Oil and Gas Institute.
