Rashmika Mandanna was born on April 5, 1996, in Virajpet, in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka, to a Kodava family — the small, distinct, originally-warrior community of the coffee-growing southwestern hills. Her father, Madan Mandanna, is a businessman; her mother, Suman, a homemaker. She is the elder of two daughters; her younger sister Shiman manages much of Rashmika's brand work.
She was educated at Coorg Public School and the Mysuru-based Mahatma Gandhi University-affiliated MS Ramaiah College in Bengaluru, where she studied psychology, journalism, and English literature. While in college she won the Clean & Clear Bangalore Times Fresh Face contest (2014). Modelling and ad work followed, then a Kannada-cinema debut in Kirik Party (December 2016), directed by Rishab Shetty and Rakshit Shetty — a film that became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films of the decade.
Her brief engagement to and breakup with co-star Rakshit Shetty became, briefly, the year's most-talked-about Kannada celebrity story. She crossed into Telugu cinema with Chalo (February 2018) opposite Naga Shaurya and then Geetha Govindam (August 2018) opposite Vijay Deverakonda, the latter becoming a major South Indian commercial success and the film that established Rashmika as a pan-Telugu lead.
The first Pushpa film — Pushpa: The Rise, Part 1, directed by Sukumar opposite Allu Arjun — released in December 2021 across multiple Indian languages simultaneously. The film grossed over 350 crore.
