Kiara Advani was born Alia Advani on July 31, 1992, in Mumbai, to Jagdeep Advani (a Sindhi businessman) and Genevieve Jaffrey (a teacher of Scottish, Spanish, Portuguese, and Irish heritage who was raised in India). She is, through her maternal aunt, related to the late actor Saeed Jaffrey. She changed her screen name to Kiara before her debut to avoid confusion with the actress Alia Bhatt, who was active in the same period.
She was educated at Jamnabai Narsee School and Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before completing a degree in mass communication from Jai Hind College. She trained briefly in acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Her Hindi-film debut was Fugly (2014), a film that did not work commercially.
The career-changing project of her first phase was M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), in which she played Sakshi Dhoni opposite Sushant Singh Rajput's M. S. Dhoni. The film was a major commercial success; the performance got her noticed. She followed it with the Netflix anthology Lust Stories (2018), specifically Karan Johar's segment, in which she played a young schoolteacher with a marital-sexual dissatisfaction storyline that became the year's most-talked-about Indian short film.
Kabir Singh (June 2019), opposite Shahid Kapoor and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, was the inflection. The film grossed over 379 crore. Kiara was, overnight, a top-tier commercial lead. She followed it with Good Newwz (2019), Laxmii (2020), Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022, opposite Kartik Aaryan, a major hit), and Jugjugg Jeeyo (2022).
Shershaah (August 2021, Amazon Prime Video) was the corrective film. Opposite Sidharth Malhotra — whom she married in February 2023 — Kiara played Dimple Cheema, fiancée of the Kargil War hero Captain Vikram Batra, who was killed in action in 1999. The performance was widely praised. The film became one of the most-watched Indian-language streaming releases of the year. Her marriage to Sidharth, in a Rajasthan ceremony in February 2023, was the year's most-photographed Indian celebrity wedding.
She has, since the wedding, run a parallel Telugu career through S. Shankar's Game Changer (2025) opposite Ram Charan, and continued her Hindi filmography. In 2026, at 33, she is in the working trade-press shortlist of the four or five most-bookable Hindi-cinema women. The journey — non-film family, name change, six commercial films before the first major hit — is the part that the industry's hiring producers tend, on the record, to point to as the reason. The outsider story was unusual. The execution was relentless.

Kiara Advani's case is one of the most-cited contemporary worked examples in Hindi cinema of the outsider lead who reaches the top tier. She entered with no industry surname, no producer father, no actor mother, and a debut that did not work. The five-year journey from Fugly to Kabir Singh is the documentation that the Hindi-film industry, despite its star-kid economy, remains in some non-zero fraction of cases a meritocracy of openings. The industry's most-vocal anti-nepotism advocates — Kangana Ranaut among others — have specifically named Kiara as the counter-example.
Her filmography also documents a deliberate balancing act between mainstream-commercial cinema and what the streaming era has made possible. Lust Stories was a Karan Johar short for Netflix. Shershaah was an Amazon Prime release. Game Changer was a Telugu theatrical.
