🇮🇳 Diljit Dosanjh

He was born in 1984 in Dosanjh Kalan, a village of mustard fields and tractor sheds in Jalandhar district, Punjab. His father was a public-transport worker; his mother a homemaker. He sang Gurbani in the village gurdwara from boyhood, with the seriousness Sikh devotional music demands. He moved to Ludhiana in his teens and recorded his first album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, in 2004 — a small Punjabi-folk release that sold modestly and gave him entry to the regional industry.

The early albums — Smile (2005), Chocolate (2008), The Next Level (2009) — were Punjabi-language pop and bhangra, polished but unremarkable. The breakthrough came in 2011 with The Lion of Punjab, the song and the film both, and the persona he had constructed for it: turbaned, full-bearded, sincere, never crude, never anglicised — a Punjabi star who refused, against the prevailing industry advice, to remove his turban for crossover acceptability.

His Hindi film debut, Udta Punjab (2016), produced by Anurag Kashyap and starring Shahid Kapoor, was the moment Bollywood realised what Punjab had known for five years. Dosanjh played Sartaj Singh, an honest constable in a drug-ravaged state. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He has since starred in Phillauri (2017), Soorma (2018), Good Newwz (2019), Jogi (2022), Amar Singh Chamkila (2024 — Imtiaz Ali's biographical film of the murdered Punjabi singer), and Crew (2024).

What separates Dosanjh, however, is not the films but the consistency of his musical career parallel to them. Albums like G.O.A.T. (2020) and MoonChild Era (2021) charted on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard 200. His collaborations with Sia ('Hass Hass'), with Camila Cabello and other global artists widened his audience without ever asking him to abandon Punjabi. He has, on principle, almost never recorded in Hindi-only or English-only modes; the language is the brand and the brand is the language.

The Coachella set of April 2023 was the cultural moment. He performed 'G.O.A.T.', 'Born to Shine', 'Patiala Peg', and several others, and the festival's main feed cut, for the first time in its history, to a non-English-language solo artist for its highlight reel. He had refused offers to translate or subtitle the songs; he insisted, before agreeing to the booking, that the audience hear them as Punjabis hear them. The set went viral across global streaming platforms within hours.

He played a sold-out Dil-Luminati world tour through 2024 — across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and India, the largest Punjabi-language concert tour in history. His North American arena shows sold out quickly. He performed for record-setting Indian-stadium audiences. He met the Canadian Prime Minister and the Indian Prime Minister in the same calendar year of his Coachella triumph and tour.

He has been notably private about his personal life. He has refused to use his family for publicity. He has retained, broadly, the same circle of producers — Tru-Skool, Aman Hayer, Snappy and others on different albums — and the same village ties for two decades. He returns to Dosanjh Kalan during major Sikh festivals and posts photographs of himself in the gurdwara where he sang as a child.

He is, in 2026, the most globally recognised Punjabi-language artist of any generation. He has, in the same year, advanced his American film career, completed additional tour legs, and continued to expand a Punjabi pop catalogue that more than a billion streams have already validated. The village boy who refused to remove his turban for Bollywood crossover, who refused to translate his songs for Coachella, who refused, in essence, every standard piece of advice given to non-English-speaking artists pursuing global success, has built the largest Punjabi-language fanbase in the language's history — and he has done it, against every conventional expectation, by being more Punjabi, not less.
