As the basketball-playing lead Troy Bolton, he became a fixture in popular teen media, reprising the role for two sequels through 2008. While he did not provide the singing vocals for the first film, he performed his own songs in subsequent musical projects, including the 2007 adaptation of the Broadway musical Hairspray, where he played Link Larkin. His early filmography also included the 2009 comedy 17 Again, in which he portrayed the younger self of a 37-year-old man.
