Zabou Breitman

Isabelle Breitman, known professionally as Zabou, began her screen career at age four in 1959. Raised in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, the daughter of actors Jean-Claude Deret and Céline Léger, she established a professional profile spanning acting and directing across cinema, television, and theatre throughout her career in France.

Early Career and Training

Before emerging as a central figure in French film, Breitman undertook formal dramatic training at the Cours Simon. Her professional acting tenure gained momentum in 1981, beginning a period of consistent performance across dozens of roles in film, television productions, and stage plays.

Directorial Breakthrough

The transition from performing to directing occurred in 2001 with the release of her debut film, Se souvenir des belles choses. The production received critical recognition, earning her a César Award for Best Debut. Beyond domestic cinema, her professional reach included international stage work, such as her 2000 appearance at the National Theatre in London.

Recognition and Public Service

Her body of work led to official state acknowledgment in 2016. She received the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour and was appointed Officer of Arts and Letters. She also holds the rank of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. Her public engagements have included participation in the television documentary series Rendez-vous en terre inconnue in 2012.
