Yogi Berra

American baseball player, manager, and coach (1925–2015)

Lawrence Peter Berra, known globally as Yogi, secured ten World Series championships as a player, a figure unmatched in the history of Major League Baseball. Born in St. Louis in 1925, he rose from a local Italian neighborhood to become an eighteen-time All-Star, defining an era of professional baseball through his defensive precision and power hitting.

Military Service and Professional Ascent

Before establishing himself in the major leagues, Berra served as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy during the Second World War. He participated in the Normandy landings, manning rocket boats at both Omaha and Utah Beach, and received a Purple Heart for his service. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he refined his catching skills under the mentorship of Bill Dickey, inheriting the number 8 uniform that the Yankees would later retire in his honor.
