Yochanan Vollach established a dual legacy as a high-ranking professional in the shipping industry and a transformative figure in Israeli football. Born in Kiryat Bialik in 1945, he transitioned from a decorated career as a defender—earning the nickname The Tank—to overseeing major administrative and commercial organizations that shaped the modern landscape of Israeli sports and maritime logistics.
Military Service and Athletic Emergence
Vollach began his sports career at Maccabi Kiryat Bialik before being drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in 1963. Serving in the Nahal infantry unit, he balanced active combat duties with athletics, winning the IDF football championship in 1965. Despite missing a full season due to military commitments, his development continued, leading to his sale to Hapoel Haifa for IL5,000 in 1965.
