Yi-Fu Tuan

Chinese-American geographer (1930-2022)

Yi-Fu Tuan travelled at a period when the map still had blanks on it, and filled some of them.

The record lists Yi-Fu Tuan as Chinese-American geographer (1930-2022).

Yi-Fu Tuan was born at Tianjin in 1930. His recorded nationality is Republic of China.

Modern exploration moved to the places the body cannot survive unaided: the deep ocean, the upper atmosphere and orbit, reached by engineering as much as by nerve.

He is recorded as geographer, university teacher and writer.

The record of exploration is also a record of the people already living in the places reached.

Recognition followed: Guggenheim Fellowship, Vautrin Lud Prize, Cullum Geographical Medal and Fellow of the British Academy.

Yi-Fu Tuan died in 2022, aged 92. The routes and charts outlived the journey, which is how exploration is actually measured.
