Yevgraf Fyodorov is remembered in geology for work that changed what the next generation was able to take for granted.
Yevgraf Fyodorov was born at Orenburg in 1853. His recorded nationality is Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. He was educated at Military Engineering-Technical University and S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy.
Professional environment and institutions
The nineteenth century professionalised science. Laboratories acquired budgets, universities acquired chairs, and for the first time a person could be a scientist by occupation rather than by inclination.

Scientific contributions and multidisciplinarity
Geology made deep time thinkable, which changed biology, cosmology and eventually theology.
Like many of his contemporaries, Yevgraf Fyodorov moved between geology, natural history, microbiology and neuroscience without regarding the boundaries as real.
The Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.
Recognition and impact
His work was formally recognised with the Order of Saint Stanislaus, 3rd class.
The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.
Later years and legacy
Death came in 1919, at 66. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of geology, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
