Academic Foundation
Born in Athens in 1938, Moschovakis pursued his higher education in the United States, attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before earning his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1963. His doctoral dissertation, titled Recursive Analysis, was completed under the direction of Stephen Kleene. Moschovakis held a long-term position at the University of California, Los Angeles, serving as a faculty member from 1964 until 2010. Concurrently, he maintained a significant presence at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he worked from 1996 until his retirement from that institution in 2005. He retains emeritus status at both the University of California and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Professional Recognition
His work has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, awarded in 1968. In 2014, he received the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix, and in 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He is also a member of the Academy of Athens. Along with his wife, Joan Moschovakis, he delivered the Lindström Lectures at the University of Gothenburg in 2014.
