Early Education and Career
Born in 1942 in Dera Ghazi Khan, Lari spent her formative years near Lahore. At 15, she moved to London with her family. After initially being rejected by architecture school, she studied arts for two years before gaining admission to the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University. Following her 1964 graduation, she returned to Pakistan to open Lari Associates. She faced significant resistance at construction sites, where her authority was frequently challenged due to her gender.

Lari designed various prominent structures throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Her notable projects included the Angoori Bagh Housing in 1978 and the Taj Mahal Hotel in Karachi, completed in 1981. She also designed the Finance and Trade Center in 1989 and the PSO Company headquarters in 1991. In 1969, she became an elected member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Humanitarian and Sustainable Design
After retiring from private practice in 2000, Lari shifted her focus toward historical preservation and humanitarian aid through the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan, which she co-founded in 1980 with her husband, Suhail Zaheer Lari. Since 2010, she has overseen the construction of 50,000 homes for disaster victims, utilizing sustainable materials like bamboo and mud-plaster. Her work in the Sindh Valley and Balochistan earthquake relief emphasized traditional building techniques. In 2018, she developed a fuel-efficient, non-toxic stove that earned a World Habitat award.
Recognition and Philosophy
Lari’s work centers on the intersection of architecture and social justice, drawing conceptual parallels between the detail-oriented approach of Mies van der Rohe and the vernacular traditions championed by Hassan Fathy. Her contributions have been recognized with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize, and the 2023 Royal Gold Medal. She has held academic positions, including The Sir Arthur Marshall Professor of Sustainable Design at the University of Cambridge.
