Xavier Cortés Rocha

Mexican architect

Twelve days after Francisco Barnés de Castro resigned as rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico during a student strike in 1999, Xavier Cortés Rocha stepped into the university's top administrative post. His five-day tenure as interim rector represents a brief but intense intersection of academic governance and the institutional history of Mexico's largest educational establishment.

Academic Foundation and Early Career

Born in 1943 in Tampico, Cortés Rocha completed his undergraduate studies in architecture at the Escuela Nacional de Arquitectura of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He extended his formal education in Paris before returning to Mexico to begin a career as a teacher. Since 1968, he has maintained a continuous relationship with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, eventually securing the status of emeritus professor within the College of Architecture.

Institutional Leadership and Public Service

Beyond his teaching duties, Cortés Rocha ascended through the university's administrative ranks. He served as the institution's Secretary General during 1999, the same year he briefly occupied the interim presidency. His professional footprint expanded into the public sector between 2001 and 2009, when he directed the Sitios y Monumentos del Patrimonio Cultural at CONACULTA. This period focused on the preservation and oversight of cultural assets across the country.

Professional Recognition and Membership

The architect has occupied several roles beyond the university, including the presidency of the Academia Nacional de Arquitectos. His contributions to the field and his work as a painter and urban planner led to his induction into the Academia de Artes in 2018. His career encompasses a blend of practical design, urban strategy, and the formal stewardship of Mexican institutional architecture.
