Educational Background and Early Party Involvement
Born in 1973 in Luxembourg, Bettel completed secondary schooling at Lycée Hélène Boucher in Thionville. He pursued higher education at the University Nancy II, where he earned a master's degree in Public and European Law alongside a DEA in Political Science and Public Law. During his studies, he participated in the Erasmus Programme at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, focusing on maritime and canon law. He became active in the Democratic Party at age 15 and served as president of the youth wing starting in 1993.

Bettel entered the Luxembourg City communal council in 1999. In 2005, he was appointed échevin, a position he held until 2011. That year, he became the Mayor of Luxembourg, remaining in the role until 2013. His national legislative career began in 1999 when he was sworn into the Chamber of Deputies. He solidified his parliamentary position during the 2004 general election, eventually leading the Democratic Party before assuming the premiership.
Leadership of the Grand Duchy
In 2013, Grand Duke Henri designated Bettel as the formateur for the national government. He served as Prime Minister from 2013 to 2023, concurrently holding portfolios such as Minister of State and Minister for Communications and Media. In 2018, he became the first openly gay prime minister in the world to be reappointed to a second term. His administration oversaw the implementation of free public transport across Luxembourg in 2020.
Transition to Deputy Prime Minister
Following the 2023 general election, Bettel transitioned to the role of Deputy Prime Minister within the Frieden-Bettel Government, a coalition between the Christian Social People's Party and the Democratic Party. In this capacity, his responsibilities include foreign and European affairs, development cooperation, and foreign trade. He continues to hold a seat in the Chamber of Deputies.
