José Alexandre Gusmão, known as Xanana, emerged from a background of manual labor and colonial service to become a central figure in the independence of Timor-Leste. Born in 1946 in Laleia, he transitioned from a corporal in the Portuguese Army to the leader of resistance movements before securing the inaugural presidency of his newly independent nation.
Early life and military service
Born to school teachers in Laleia, Gusmão attended Jesuit schools in Dare and Dili. After leaving formal secondary education in 1961, he worked various unskilled jobs while continuing his studies at night. In 1968, he was recruited for national service by the Portuguese Army, serving for three years and achieving the rank of corporal. Following his discharge in 1971, he became involved in nationalist activities led by José Ramos-Horta.

During the 1975 internal conflicts in Portuguese Timor, Gusmão joined the Fretilin faction. Following the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in late 1975, he moved into resistance leadership. In 1981, he was elected head of Falintil. By 1988, he founded the National Council of Resistance (CNRT) to unite various underground networks. His work during the 1990s focused on international diplomacy and media coordination, particularly after the 1991 Santa Cruz massacre.
Imprisonment and political career
Captured by the Indonesian military in 1992 in a tunnel near Dili, Gusmão was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1993, a sentence later commuted to 20 years. He spent his incarceration at Cipinang prison in Jakarta. Upon his return to politics, he served as the first President of East Timor from 2002 to 2007. He subsequently served as Prime Minister from 2007 to 2015 and resumed the office of Prime Minister in 2023.
