Formative Education and Early Professional Years
East attended Monmouth School before enrolling at Wadham College, Oxford, where he completed a bachelor's degree in engineering science. His professional foundations were laid at Texas Instruments, where he spent eleven years before transitioning to the microprocessor design firm ARM Holdings in 1994.

Upon joining ARM, East established the company's consulting division and eventually ascended to the role of vice-president of business operations. Within three years, he secured a seat on the board as chief operating officer. In October 2001, he took the position of chief executive officer, a role he maintained until his departure on 1 July 2013, when Simon Segars succeeded him.
Executive Challenges at Rolls-Royce
In 2014, East joined the board of Rolls-Royce Holdings as a non-executive director. By July 2015, he succeeded John Rishton as chief executive officer. His seven-year tenure involved managing complex technical challenges, including issues with the Trent 1000 engine, as well as the significant market disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He guided the organization through pressures related to net-zero carbon goals before retiring at the end of 2022.
Governance and Public Service
Beyond his direct executive roles, East has served in various board and advisory capacities. He joined the board of ASML Holding in January 2020. In April 2024, he assumed the role of Chair of NATS Holdings, managing air traffic control services in the United Kingdom.
