Born in Essex in 1968, Warren Ellis has established a career spanning comics, screenwriting, and novels. He began his professional writing journey in 1986 with a roleplaying magazine strip titled Whiplash. Early Career and Comics Foundations
Before his rise to prominence, Ellis held various roles, including work in record and stationery shops. His early foray into professional writing occurred in 1986 within the pages of the roleplaying magazine Adventurer. Following minor contributions to publications like Deadline and local college magazines, he secured work at Marvel Comics by 1994. Ellis achieved significant recognition during his tenure at WildStorm, an imprint of Image Comics. Collaborating with Bryan Hitch, he developed The Authority, a series credited with introducing the concept of widescreen comics to the industry. Simultaneously, he launched Transmetropolitan, a creator-owned project featuring a gonzo journalist in a dystopian setting. This title migrated to Vertigo, a DC Comics imprint, where it concluded its 60-issue run in 2002.
Prose and Multi-Platform Storytelling
Beyond comics, Ellis transitioned into prose, publishing the novel Crooked Little Vein in 2007, followed by Gun Machine in 2013 and the novella Normal in 2016. His screenwriting credits include the animated film G.I. Joe: Resolute and the Netflix series Castlevania, on which he served as head writer from 2017 to 2021. He also contributed to video game narratives, notably writing for Hostile Waters, Cold Winter, and Dead Space.
