Early Education and Party Entry
Born in 1970 in Hải Dương province, Võ Văn Thưởng completed his undergraduate studies in 1992 before pursuing advanced training. He earned a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in 1999. His commitment to the Communist Party of Vietnam began early, as he was admitted as an official member in November 1994. He further refined his professional background by attending the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, where he obtained an advanced diploma in political theory.

The early phase of his career focused heavily on youth organizations and student advocacy in Ho Chi Minh City. He served as the Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Students' Association starting in 1995. By 2007, he had ascended to become the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, a position he held alongside the chairmanship of the National Committee on Youth of Vietnam.
Provincial Leadership and Politburo Membership
Thưởng transitioned to broader administrative roles, serving as the Secretary of the Quảng Ngãi Provincial Party Committee starting in 2011. In 2016, following the 12th National Congress, he was elected to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. At 45, he was the youngest member of that body at the time. From 2016 to 2021, he directed the Central Propaganda Department and later served as the Permanent Member of the Secretariat from 2021 to 2023.
Presidency and Resignation
Thưởng assumed the presidency following the resignation of Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. As head of state, he conducted diplomatic engagements including a notable meeting with Pope Francis. His presidency concluded on 21 March 2024, when he resigned amid an internal anti-corruption campaign after former subordinates from his time in Quảng Ngãi province faced arrest. He served as president for only one year, making him the second shortest-serving president in the country's history.
