The starting goalkeeper for Fenerbahçe and the Turkey national team for many years, Volkan Demirel began his professional progression at Kartalspor in 1999. Born in Fatih, Istanbul, in 1981, he established a career characterized by multiple Süper Lig titles and a significant presence in international competition before transitioning into a managerial role across several Turkish football clubs.
Early Career and Fenerbahçe Tenure
After developing his skills at Kartalspor, Demirel secured a transfer to Fenerbahçe in 2002. His debut occurred on 26 April 2003. Throughout his time at the club, he navigated periods of rotation with goalkeepers Rüştü Reçber, Recep Biler, and Serdar Kulbilge. During the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League campaign, he played a critical role in the Round of 16 against Sevilla, where he saved three penalties in a shootout to propel the team into the quarter-finals for the first time in club history. He eventually secured a long-term future at the club by signing a four-year extension following the 2008–09 season.

Demirel represented Turkey across various youth levels, including four caps for the U-20 squad and 21 appearances for the U-21 team between 2001 and 2003. He debuted for the senior national team on 28 April 2004 against Belgium. He served as the primary goalkeeper during the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, helping Turkey reach the semi-finals. His involvement ended abruptly after he received a red card for an altercation with Jan Koller during the match against the Czech Republic. His national team tenure concluded in 2014 following a conflict with a supporter prior to a Euro 2016 qualifying match.
Coaching and Management
Upon retiring as a player on 2 September 2019, Demirel transitioned to an assistant coaching role at Fenerbahçe, working under Ersun Yanal, Tahir Karapınar, Erol Bulut, and Emre Belözoğlu. He departed this position on 14 July 2021. Subsequently, he pursued head coaching opportunities, signing with Fatih Karagümrük in December 2021 and Hatayspor in September 2022. Most recently, he managed Bodrum starting in October 2024 before the two parties mutually parted ways in February 2025.
