Early Life and Professional Background
Born in Minsk in 1963, Viktar Babaryka completed his secondary education in 1981. He pursued academic training at the Belarusian State University, graduating from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics in 1988. Later, he earned credentials from the Academy of Public Administration and the Belarusian State Economic University. His early professional experience included time at the Powder Metallurgy Institute before he entered the banking sector in July 1995. In July 2000, he reached the leadership of Belgazprombank, serving as chairman of the management board until his voluntary resignation on 12 May 2020.

Beyond his financial career, Babaryka acted as a significant patron of the arts. He co-founded the International Children's Charity Foundation Chance in 2008 to assist seriously ill children. His cultural contributions included funding 15,000 copies of Svetlana Alexievich's works for public libraries and facilitating the return of historically significant items to Belarus, such as the original Francysk Skaryna Bible and paintings by Marc Chagall, Chaïm Soutine, and Léon Bakst. He also launched OK16, an art space dedicated to hosting exhibitions and theatrical productions.
The 2020 Presidential Campaign
Upon resigning from Belgazprombank, Babaryka launched a presidential bid, rapidly gathering 425,000 signatures by 19 June 2020, surpassing historical records. Independent internet polls positioned him as the frontrunner, leading to his endorsement by figures such as Svetlana Alexievich and former candidates Uladzimir Nyaklyayew and Andrei Sannikov. Despite his popularity, the Central Election Commission denied his registration on 14 July 2020. Following his detention, his team coordinated with those of other candidates to support Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
Detention and Legal Status
Babaryka was arrested in June 2020 on allegations of financial impropriety. In January 2021, a court sentenced him to 14 years in prison for bribery and tax evasion, charges widely viewed as politically motivated. During his imprisonment, he faced severe injury in April 2023, followed by a period where his whereabouts remained undisclosed by authorities. His son, Eduard, was also imprisoned in 2020 and received an eight-year sentence in 2023. Babaryka was released and effectively deported from Belarus in December 2025.
