Vijay Mallya

Indian businessman and former Member of Parliament

Vijay Vittal Mallya, born in 1955 in Kolkata, expanded his family's brewing conglomerate into a multi-national empire before navigating a complex series of legal challenges regarding financial insolvency. A graduate of St. Xavier's College, he held leadership roles in diverse sectors ranging from spirits and aviation to agriculture, eventually becoming a prominent target of extradition efforts by Indian authorities.

Early Career and Corporate Expansion

The son of Vittal Mallya and Lalitha Ramaiah, Vijay Mallya was educated at La Martiniere Calcutta and graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, in 1976 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He gained early professional experience interning at his family's businesses and later at the American division of Hoechst AG. Following his father's death in 1983, he assumed the chairmanship of the United Breweries Group at the age of 28. Over the subsequent decades, he oversaw the diversification of the firm into various sectors, including real estate, fertilizer, and aviation infrastructure. By the late 1990s, the conglomerate managed a portfolio of over 60 companies, with an annual turnover reaching approximately US$11 billion.

Diversification and Brand Development

Mallya acquired several significant assets, including Berger Paints, Best and Crompton, and Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers. His leadership at United Spirits Ltd saw the company achieve the milestone of selling 100 million cases, positioning it as one of the largest spirits entities globally by volume. Kingfisher beer, a core product of the group, established a significant market share in India and expanded its reach to 52 international markets. Additionally, he served as chairman for several major entities, including Sanofi India and Bayer CropScience, for over two decades.

Kingfisher Airlines and Legal Challenges

In 2005, Mallya launched Kingfisher Airlines, a major commercial aviation project. The airline eventually became insolvent, accumulating over US$1 billion in debt by 2013 and losing its operational license. Following the airline's collapse, Mallya faced allegations of financial crimes, including claims of being a willful defaulter and money laundering. Indian authorities initiated extradition efforts to address these charges. While he managed to divest control of United Spirits to Diageo in 2012, subsequent severance payments were blocked by courts in India. As of April 2025, legal proceedings regarding his extradition and asset attachment remain unresolved, with various arrest warrants issued by courts in Hyderabad and Mumbai.
