A total of 111.5 kilograms lifted in a two-handed clean and jerk maneuver earned Alexander Viggo Jensen the distinction of becoming the first Olympic champion from Denmark. This achievement occurred at the inaugural modern games, where the Copenhagen native successfully outperformed his competitors to secure gold despite a formal protest from the British delegation regarding judging criteria.
Olympic Weightlifting Performance
During the 1896 weightlifting competition, Jensen entered a deadlock with Launceston Elliot of Great Britain and Ireland. Officials initially awarded Jensen the top spot due to superior form. A subsequent protest led to additional attempts for both athletes, during which neither managed to increase their total. Jensen maintained his victory, yet the exertion caused a shoulder injury that would limit his capacity in later events.

The shoulder injury significantly hindered Jensen's performance in the one-handed lift, commonly identified as the snatch. He achieved a result of 57.0 kilograms, finishing behind Elliot, who reached 71.0 kilograms. Beyond weightlifting, Jensen participated in track and field events, placing fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus throw.
Gymnastics and Shooting
Jensen pursued a diverse athletic program in the gymnastics arena, specifically entering the rope climbing event. He failed to reach the top of the 14-metre rope, ultimately placing fourth behind two Greek athletes and Fritz Hofmann. In shooting competitions, he participated in two rifle categories. He recorded a sixth-place finish in the military rifle with 1,640 points. His performance in the free rifle proved more effective, as he earned third place with 1,305 points across 31 hits.
