Early Life and Education
Born on April 25, 1969, in Genoa, Italy, Beecroft spent her formative years in Santa Margherita Ligure and Malcesine. Her parents, Maria Luisa and British teacher Andrew Beecroft, separated when she was three. Raised in a restrictive environment, she struggled with an eating disorder during her youth. Her formal education included attendance at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti and the Brera Academy in Milan from 1988 to 1993.

Beecroft’s performances often involve models who must remain motionless for extended periods, frequently wearing high heels and restricted attire. Her early work, such as the 1994 series VB02 through VB08, utilized white underwear and red wigs to mirror her own hair. In 1996, she moved to New York City at the request of art dealer Jeffrey Deitch. Her installations eventually expanded to venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, where VB35 featured women arranged in a circular formation to reflect the building's architecture.
Thematic Evolution and Public Installations
Her practice shifted from autobiographical themes toward broader social and political commentary. In 2007, she presented VB61, Still Death! Darfur Still Deaf?, at the 52nd Venice Biennale, using Sudanese women to simulate casualties of the conflict in Darfur. Later projects explored human migration and classical aesthetics, such as the 2009 performance VB65 in Milan, which depicted African immigrants in a scene resembling the Last Supper, and VB70: Marmi (2011), which integrated live models with marble sculptures in Carrara.
