Traianos Dellas

Greek association football player and manager

Traianos Dellas remains the only professional footballer in history to score a silver goal in an international match, a feat achieved during the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2004. Known widely by the moniker 'the Colossus of Rhodes' for his defensive presence, he anchored the Greek backline that secured the 2004 continental title after defeating the hosts, Portugal, in the final.

Early Career and International Rise

Born on 31 January 1976 in Thessaloniki, Dellas began his professional career with Aris in 1993. His development continued through a two-season loan at Panserraikos and a subsequent move to England with Sheffield United, where he became noted for a match-winning performance against Tranmere Rovers in 1999. His international breakthrough occurred during Euro 2004. Playing as a sweeper, he formed a defensive partnership with Michalis Kapsis that proved impenetrable throughout the tournament. His crucial silver goal against the Czech Republic ensured Greece’s progression to the final, earning him a spot in the competition's all-star squad.

European Club Tenure

Following his initial stint with AEK Athens, which included a Greek Cup victory in 2000, Dellas experienced a turbulent tenure at the Italian club Perugia. He later joined Roma in 2002 on a free transfer. During Roma's difficult 2004–05 season, he stood out as one of the few players consistently supported by the fans. Despite these efforts, injuries and unsuccessful contract negotiations limited his later time in Serie A. He subsequently enjoyed periods with Anorthosis Famagusta, helping the Cypriot club qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and returned to AEK Athens, where he secured a second Greek Cup in 2011 before retiring in 2012.

Management Career

Dellas transitioned into coaching in 2013 by taking charge of AEK Athens. He successfully steered the team back into the Super League following a period in the third division. His subsequent managerial career included appointments at Atromitos and two distinct spells at Panetolikos. His return to Panetolikos in 2020 was specifically aimed at avoiding relegation, an objective he achieved through a successful playoff campaign in 2021 before concluding his tenure with the club.
