Early Development in Oklahoma
Born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1998, Young grew up in Pampa, Texas. He attended Norman North High School in Norman, Oklahoma, where his statistical production increased significantly each year. By his senior season, he averaged 42.6 points per game. Recruiting services including ESPN, Scout.com, and Rivals.com identified him as a top prospect, leading to his commitment to the University of Oklahoma in February 2017.

During his lone season at Oklahoma, Young recorded 22 assists in a single game against Northwestern State, tying the NCAA Division I record at that time. He finished the season with 848 total points and 271 assists, breaking conference records previously held by Michael Beasley and Kevin Durant. His performance earned him the Wayman Tisdale Award and consensus All-American First Team honors.
Transition to the NBA
Young declared for the 2018 NBA draft following his freshman season. The Dallas Mavericks selected him fifth overall before trading his draft rights to the Atlanta Hawks. In his first professional season, he was a unanimous selection for the NBA All-Rookie First Team. His tenure in Atlanta included three postseason appearances and a trip to the conference finals in 2021.
