Traian Vuia achieved the first powered takeoff of a monoplane from level ground on 18 March 1906, at Montesson, France. By successfully lifting his machine into the air without the assistance of rails, catapults, or inclined slopes, the Romanian inventor challenged the prevailing skepticism of his era regarding the feasibility of heavier-than-air flight.
Early Education and Engineering Ambitions
Born in 1872 in Surducu Mic, Vuia attended the Roman Catholic high school in Lugoj before enrolling in the School of Mechanics at the Polytechnic University of Budapest. He earned an engineering diploma and subsequently completed a PhD in law in May 1901. His dissertation, titled Military and Industry, State and Contract Regime, preceded his focus on aviation. After developing initial designs for an airplane-car in Lugoj, he relocated to Paris in 1902 to seek financial support.

Upon arriving in Paris, Vuia faced rejection from the Académie des Sciences. Despite the lack of institutional backing, he secured French patent No. 332106 in May 1903. He commissioned the construction of the Vuia I from the Parisian firm Hockenjos and Schmitt. This high-wing monoplane featured a steel tube frame, pneumatic tires, and a unique 19 kW engine powered by a Serpollet boiler using liquid carbon dioxide. By 1905, the aircraft was ready for testing.
Flight Trials and Legacy
The Vuia I achieved a lift-off of 12 meters on 18 March 1906, followed by a 24-meter hop in August. While the craft lacked the capacity for sustained flight, it demonstrated that wheel-based takeoff on ordinary ground was possible. Later, Vuia developed the Vuia II, a lighter monoplane equipped with an Antoinette internal combustion engine. During World War II, he served as a prominent leader of the Romanian Resistance in France before returning to his homeland, where he died in 1950 and was buried at Bellu Cemetery.
