Tony Richardson won the 1964 Academy Awards for both Best Director and Best Picture for his adaptation of Tom Jones. Early Career and Education
Raised in Shipley, Richardson attended Ashville College and Wadham College, Oxford. At university, he served as president of both the Oxford University Dramatic Society and the Experimental Theatre Club. His early professional work included a 1955 television debut with The Apollo of Bellac and the co-directed non-fiction short Momma Don't Allow, which established his involvement in the Free Cinema movement.

In 1959, he co-founded Woodfall Film Productions with John Osborne and Harry Saltzman. The company produced his debut feature, Look Back in Anger, followed by other significant works including The Entertainer, A Taste of Honey, and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. These films solidified his status within the British New Wave, focusing on raw, location-based storytelling.
Stylistic Variety and Hollywood
Richardson maintained a diverse filmography, ranging from the static-camera noir of Mademoiselle to the epic scale of The Charge of the Light Brigade. He eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1974. His later work included the 1984 comedy-drama The Hotel New Hampshire and his final project, Blue Sky, which was released posthumously in 1994 and earned Jessica Lange an Academy Award.
