Toko Shinoda

Japanese artist (1913–2021)

Toko Shinoda is remembered for work the next generation could not ignore.

The record lists Toko Shinoda as Japanese artist (1913–2021).

Toko Shinoda was born at Dalian in 1913. Her recorded nationality is Japan.

Around the turn of the twentieth century the movements arrived in quick succession, each defining itself against the last.

She worked as lithographer, painter and printmaker.

A painting outlives the argument about it, which is the only durable form of an artistic reputation.

That the work was made in Japan shaped it: artistic traditions, academies and the galleries that decide what is seen have never been evenly distributed.

Toko Shinoda died in 2021, aged 108. The work remains, hanging in collections that outlived both the artist and the market that first priced it.
