Early Career and Metallurgical Innovations
Born in 1893, Tokuji Hayakawa left primary school after the second grade to become an apprentice in a metal ornament shop. His path toward industrial leadership began with the creation of the Tokubijō buckle. This device utilized a roller mechanism to fasten belts at any length without requiring perforations. The rising demand for Western-style fashion in Japan fueled the success of this product, leading Hayakawa to secure borrowed capital and establish his own manufacturing operation in September 1912.

Following his initial success with belt buckles, Hayakawa expanded his technical portfolio. In 1913, he acquired a patent for a water faucet design. Two years later, in 1915, he developed the Ever Ready Sharp mechanical pencil. The brand identity of this writing instrument eventually provided the namesake for Hayakawa Kinzoku Kōgyō, which evolved into the modern-day Sharp Corporation. Under his leadership, the company diversified into the mass production of electronic goods, including televisions, radios, and tape recorders.
Honors and Legacy
Throughout his life, Hayakawa engaged in social welfare initiatives alongside his business activities. His professional achievements earned him various accolades in Japan, including the Okochi Production Award in 1971 and the 29th NHK Broadcasting Culture Award in 1978. In 1960, he received the Medal of Honor with Blue Ribbon. His career was further distinguished by the Order of the Sacred Treasure, receiving the Third Class in 1965 and the Gold and Silver Star, Second Class in 1976. Hayakawa died in Osaka in 1980 at the age of 86.
