With 84 caps earned for the Finland national football team, Tim Sparv transitioned from a defensive midfielder to a professional coach. Born in Oravais on 20 February 1987, his career spans over a decade of international competition and spells at several European clubs, eventually leading him to managerial roles and tactical advisory positions in international football.
Early Career and Youth Development
Sparv spent three years in the youth academy of Southampton, reaching the 2005 FA Youth Cup final. Following his time in England, he moved to the Swedish Allsvenskan, signing with Halmstads BK in 2007 on the advice of Michael Svensson. During this period, he also spent time on loan at Vaasan Palloseura in 2008 to regain playing time.

In 2010, Sparv joined the Eredivisie club Groningen, where he scored his first goal during the 2010–11 season. After his stint in the Netherlands, he moved to Germany to play for Greuther Fürth in the 2. Bundesliga. His most significant domestic success occurred at FC Midtjylland, which he joined in 2014, helping the team secure three Danish Superliga titles and the 2018–19 Danish Cup.
International Representation
Sparv debuted for Finland’s senior team on 4 February 2009 against Japan. He represented his country throughout numerous World Cup qualification cycles and captained the national side during UEFA Euro 2020. His youth international career included participation in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where he served as team captain.
Coaching and Management
Following his retirement as a player, Sparv transitioned into coaching. He held roles with Sparta Prague, including youth coaching and first-team assistance, before being appointed as the manager of the Portuguese club Mafra on 29 May 2026. Simultaneously, he took on an assistant coaching position with the Finland national team in June 2024.
