Timo Juhani Soini reshaped the Finnish electoral landscape by guiding the Finns Party from its 1995 inception to a major role in government. A Master of Political Science graduate from the University of Helsinki, he spent two decades as party leader, eventually securing high-level cabinet positions including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs between 2015 and 2019.
Early Political Trajectory
Born in Rauma in 1962, Soini began his career in the Finnish Rural Party, serving as its secretary-general from 1992. Following that party's dissolution in 1995, he co-founded the True Finns Party, which later became the Finns Party. He assumed the role of chairperson in 1997, holding the position until 2017. His initial attempts to gain a parliamentary seat were unsuccessful in 1999, but he won election to the Finnish Parliament in 2003.

Soini attained significant visibility in 2009 by winning a seat in the European Parliament with the highest personal vote share in Finland at the time. He later achieved success in the 2011 Finnish parliamentary elections, where the Finns Party secured 39 seats. He gained a reputation as a critic of European Union bailouts and safety mechanisms, a stance that defined his political platform and public discourse.
Government Tenure and Party Departure
In May 2015, Soini became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs within a coalition government. During his time in office, he served as Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from 2018 to 2019. In 2017, he stepped down as party chair, which triggered an internal leadership contest. Following the election of Jussi Halla-aho, Soini broke away to form a separate parliamentary group and was subsequently expelled from his own party. He stepped away from politics following the 2019 election.
