His early career saw him adopt various personas across multiple circuits, including The Commando and The Master of Pain. In 1989, he joined World Championship Wrestling as Mean Mark Callous, initially appearing as a member of The Skyscrapers tag team before transitioning to a singles career managed by Paul E. Dangerously.

After securing a meeting with Vince McMahon, Calaway joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1990 and debuted the Undertaker character.
