Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri captured the WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 1983, marking the only time an Iranian athlete reached the pinnacle of the promotion. Known universally by his ring persona, The Iron Sheik, he emerged as a dominant antagonist during the 1980s, instrumental in building the career of Hulk Hogan through their highly publicized rivalry.
Early Athletic Foundations
Born in 1942 in Damghan, Vaziri grew up in a household with limited resources. He developed his physical skills in his youth, identifying with the Olympic champion Gholamreza Takhti. Before transitioning to professional wrestling, he served in the Imperial Iranian Army and acted as a bodyguard for Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. His technical base was firmly rooted in amateur wrestling; he competed for a spot on the 1968 Olympic team and later earned the title of AAU Greco-Roman wrestling champion in 1971 at 180.5 pounds.

Vaziri entered the professional circuit in 1972 after training under Billy Robinson at Verne Gagne’s camp. Early in his tenure with the American Wrestling Association, he wrestled as a face. However, he soon adopted the heel persona that would define his career. Shaving his head and adopting a distinctive mustache, he incorporated traditional Persian clubs into his act to emphasize his ethnic background. Operating under names like The Great Hossein Arab, he secured early championships before finding widespread notoriety in the WWF and Jim Crockett Promotions.
Championship Reign and Legacy
The pinnacle of his career arrived in late 1983 when he challenged Bob Backlund for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. By employing his signature Camel Clutch, he forced a title change that transitioned the belt toward Hulk Hogan. Beyond his solo work, he teamed with Nikolai Volkoff to secure the WWF Tag Team Championship at the inaugural WrestleMania. Although he remained a villain for most of his active years, he later attained a different kind of public visibility through appearances on shows like The Howard Stern Show and various digital media platforms.
