In the history of biochemistry, Tasuku Honjo occupies the ground between patient observation and the larger claims it makes possible.
Tasuku Honjo was born at Kyoto in 1942. His recorded nationality is Japan. He was educated at Kyoto University and Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School.
Twentieth-century science was collaborative, expensive and political: the questions were pursued by teams, and the answers had consequences that reached well past the laboratory.
His working life was spent at Hirosaki University, Kyoto University and University of Osaka, where the work centred on immunology.
His name is attached above all to identification of programmed cell death protein 1. Biochemistry is where life stops being a mystery and becomes reactions that can be traced, measured and interrupted.
That the work was done from Japan matters to the story. Science has never been evenly distributed, and where a person is based has always shaped which problems are reachable and whose results get read.
