Early influences and musical foundations
Tikaram grew up listening to the Beatles, soul, and country music, while family gatherings involved members of the Fijian community. During her school years, she participated in a guitar club and engaged with theatre. Her formative influences included Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, and the writer Virginia Woolf. She authored her first song, Poor Cow, while preparing for her A-level examinations.

After signing with WEA in 1988, Tikaram released her debut album, Ancient Heart, which was produced by Rod Argent and Peter Van Hooke. The record achieved double platinum status in the United Kingdom by July 1989. The album featured hit singles including Twist in My Sobriety and Good Tradition, leading to nominations at the 1989 Brit Awards for Best British Female and Best British Single.
Development and creative transitions
Following the success of her debut, Tikaram released The Sweet Keeper in 1990 and Everybody's Angel in 1991. In 1992, she took on production duties for Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, an album inspired by the work of Richard Yates. Her subsequent discography included Lovers in the City in 1995 and The Cappuccino Songs in 1998, followed by a seven-year hiatus from studio recordings.
Recent projects and stylistic range
Tikaram returned to studio recording with the 2005 piano-led album Sentimental. Her career continued with the releases of Can't Go Back, Closer to the People, and LIAR (Love Isn't a Right). In 2022, she featured as a vocalist for Sonia Boyce's installation Feeling Her Way, presented at the 59th Venice Biennale. Her work frequently integrates elements of jazz, folk, and Americana.
