Early Career and Junior Success
Poutiainen began skiing at age three. Her competitive progression moved quickly through the junior ranks. In 1997, she claimed the junior world championship title in slalom in Schladming, Austria, while also earning a bronze medal in the super-G event. During the 1999 Junior World Championships held at Pra-Loup, France, she recorded a third-place finish in the giant slalom. Her first appearance on the World Cup stage occurred in March 1997 at Vail, United States.

History was made on 28 February 2004 when Poutiainen secured her first World Cup victory in Levi, Finland. This event marked the first time an alpine World Cup race was hosted in the country, and she became the first Finnish woman to win at this level. The 2005 season proved highly successful, as she claimed the discipline titles for both slalom and giant slalom, while finishing fifth in the overall standings. Her performance that year included three slalom wins and one giant slalom victory among ten total podium finishes.
Championships and Consistency
At the 2005 World Championships, Poutiainen earned silver in both the slalom and giant slalom, finishing behind Anja Pärson and Janica Kostelić. She later added another giant slalom title in 2009 and earned two bronze medals at the World Championships in Val d'Isère. Throughout her career, she became known for reliability, completing 67 consecutive World Cup races between January 2007 and March 2011. She participated in the 1998, 2002, 2010, and 2014 Winter Olympics.
Retirement
By the conclusion of the 2014 season, Poutiainen had accumulated 11 World Cup victories, including five in giant slalom and six in slalom, alongside 48 total podium appearances. Having trained under Michael Bont, she announced her retirement in March 2014. She currently resides in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
