Tang Shengjie currently holds the distinction of being the youngest taikonaut to travel to the Tiangong Space Station. Selected in 2020 as part of the third group of Chinese astronauts, he represents the next generation of engineers involved in the Shenzhou program. Military Career and Training
Born in December 1989 in Dingxi, Gansu, Tang joined the People's Liberation Army in September 2008. He completed his formal education at the Air Force Aviation University in 2012. During his tenure with the People's Liberation Army Air Force, he served as a pilot for 13 years and acted as a captain of a flying squadron. Throughout his military service, he gained experience operating six different aircraft types, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In September 2020, the space program selected Tang as an aerospace flight engineer. His training regimen included rigorous preparations for extravehicular activities, which required extensive underwater exercises to simulate the conditions of working in orbit. By June 2022, he was officially assigned as an operator for the Shenzhou 17 mission.
Orbital Mission
Tang launched on the Shenzhou-17 mission on 26 October 2023. The spacecraft successfully docked with the Tiangong Space Station later that same day. This mission marked a significant milestone in his professional development, integrating his background as a pilot into the demands of space flight engineering. In 2024, he received the Spaceflight Exploit Medal in recognition of his contributions.
