The Sethi model fundamentally changed how analysts interpret sales evolution, grounding market fluctuations in three distinct variables: advertising effectiveness, competitive forgetting, and random noise. This mathematical framework represents just one facet of a career dedicated to operations research, manufacturing systems, and the rigorous application of optimal control theory to complex industrial and supply chain networks.
Academic Foundations and Training
Born in 1945, Suresh P. Sethi began his formal education at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, where he earned a B.Tech. with honours in Mechanical Engineering. He later moved to the United States, obtaining an M.S. in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Washington State University. He ultimately received his PhD in operations research from Carnegie Mellon University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University under the guidance of George B. Dantzig.

Take the IQ test →Contributions to Optimal Control Theory
Sethi has extensively researched manufacturing and operations management, finance, and economics. He is recognized for defining the Sethi-Skiba point, which identifies indifference thresholds in optimal control problems where multiple optimal solutions coexist. His scholarly output includes numerous books, such as Optimal Control Theory, Average-Cost Control of Stochastic Manufacturing Systems, and Throughput Optimization in Robotic Cells, alongside his collaborative work on Markovian demand inventory models.
Professional Appointments and Editorial Leadership
Currently serving as the Eugene McDermott Chair of Operations Management and Director of the Center for Intelligent Supply Networks at the University of Texas at Dallas, Sethi holds a long-standing academic record that includes a tenure at Rice University. His editorial contributions are substantial, having served as a departmental editor for Production and Operations Management and as an associate editor for journals including Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Automatica. He is also a corresponding editor for the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.
Professional Recognition
The impact of his research is evidenced by 31,850 total citations, an h-index of 86, and an i10-index of 334. His contributions to the mathematical and operations community have earned him fellowship status in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, conferred in 2009, as well as fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada.

Questions readers ask
What does the Sethi model measure?
It tracks how sales evolve over time based on advertising impact, market forgetting or competition, and random environmental effects.
What is a Sethi-Skiba point?
It is an indifference point in an optimal control problem where a system may move toward more than one distinct optimal solution.
