Growing up in Walton, Kentucky, as the son of a trainer and farrier, his physical stature and constant proximity to horses paved a direct path into professional racing before his seventeenth birthday.
Early Success in North America
Cauthen’s competitive start occurred on May 12, 1976, at Churchill Downs, where he finished last aboard King of Swat. Success followed quickly when he rode his first winner, Red Pipe, at River Downs. By 1977, he led the United States with 487 race wins. The following year, he cemented his status as the youngest jockey to win the U.S. Triple Crown while riding Affirmed. His rapid rise earned him the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award and the distinction of being the only jockey named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year.

Facing persistent challenges with his riding weight in the United States, Cauthen relocated to the United Kingdom, where weight requirements were more accommodating. In April 1979, he won his first British race at Salisbury aboard Marquee Universal. During his tenure in Britain, he achieved the title of Champion Jockey three times and secured ten English classic victories.
International Victories and Legacy
Cauthen’s expertise extended across Europe, where he claimed major stakes in France, Italy, and Germany. His notable successes include victories in the 1989 French Derby and the Italian Derby in 1991. He remains the only jockey to have won both the Kentucky Derby and the Epsom Derby. Following his retirement from the track, Cauthen returned to his home state of Kentucky to manage a stud farm with his wife, Amy, with whom he has three daughters.
