Nival was established in 1996 by Sergey Orlovskiy, who utilized his academic background from the MSU Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics to enter the software sector. As the founder and CEO, he navigated the transition from stand-alone PC game development to digital self-publishing, overseeing a diverse portfolio of titles that spanned several decades of industry evolution.

Early Career and Software Development

Born in Magadan on September 15, 1972, Orlovskiy established his presence in the Moscow technology scene during the 1990s. His initial contributions to the industry included programming work on Sea Legends in 1996. Following this, he transitioned into executive production and design roles for titles such as Rage of Mages, Evil Islands, and the Blitzkrieg series. These projects established a model for his studio, focusing on complex game design and large-scale project management.

Structural Changes and Capital Expansion

In 2006, Orlovskiy launched Nival Online, securing 20 million USD in funding from Digital Sky Technologies to pivot toward the online gaming market. This subsidiary eventually merged with Astrum and was acquired by Mail.ru in 2009. The parent organization, Nival, continued to attract significant interest from institutional investors. A minority stake was acquired in 2010 by Digital Sky Technologies and 1C for 5 million USD. Furthermore, in 2013, the company secured 6 million USD in a Series A round led by Almaz Capital, a stakeholder that held its position until 2024.

Industry Influence and Professional Recognition

Orlovskiy has maintained a consistent presence in industry discourse, notably through keynotes at the Russian Games Developers Conference KRI. During his 2009 presentation, Playing with God, he identified cross-platform gaming as a primary technological frontier. His industry standing was further solidified in 2009 when he was included in the Top 20 influential people in MMO by MOG. In 2012, he joined the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media Expert Council, and by 2015, he was frequently identified as a significant figure in the Russian and CIS gaming sectors.
