Literary Career and Children's Verse

Mikhalkov established himself as a prominent figure in the Soviet literary scene, gaining significant popularity for his children's books. His most recognized creation, Uncle Styopa, depicted an exceptionally tall and helpful policeman who became a staple of Soviet youth literature. Beyond verse for children, he produced satirical fables and scripts for various Soviet comedies, finding success in these diverse formats while maintaining his standing within the USSR Union of Writers.

Composition of National Anthems

In 1942, Joseph Stalin commissioned the 29-year-old Mikhalkov to write lyrics for a new national anthem. Working with El-Registan to match the music of Alexander Alexandrov, he produced the State Anthem of the Soviet Union, introduced in 1944. Following the death of Stalin, he revised these lyrics to remove the leader's name, receiving official approval in 1977. Years later, in 2000, he provided updated verses for the Russian Federation, cementing his role in crafting the musical symbols of the state.

Political Engagement and Later Years

Mikhalkov served as a Lieutenant Colonel, a war correspondent, and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. His career intersected with the state apparatus, and he held a membership in parliament. He received numerous distinctions throughout his life, including the Stalin Prize in 1942, the Lenin Prize in 1970, and the Order of Lenin on multiple occasions. In his later years, he remained active in public life until his death in Moscow in 2009, aged 96.
