Early Career in Finland
Koivu began his professional journey with TPS in the Finnish SM-liiga starting in the 1992–93 season. He contributed to a Kanada-malja championship during his rookie year. His performance earned him several honors, including the Veli-Pekka Ketola trophy for scoring, the Kultainen kypärä, and the Lasse Oksanen trophy. Selected 21st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1993 NHL entry draft, Koivu joined the team in 1995. He was appointed the 27th captain of the franchise on September 30, 1999. His leadership spanned 14 years with the club, tied with Jean Béliveau for the longest tenure in team history. Beyond his club duties, he captained the Finnish national team from 1998 to 2010.
Medical Challenges and Resilience
In September 2001, Koivu was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, forcing him to miss most of the 2001–02 season. Following cancer treatment, he returned to the ice in April 2002. His performance earned him the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. In 2006, he suffered a serious eye injury during a playoff game against the Carolina Hurricanes, resulting in permanent loss of peripheral vision, yet he continued to compete at a high level.
Awards and Recognition
Koivu's career is marked by various accolades. In 2007, he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his humanitarian efforts through the Saku Koivu Foundation. His professional impact was further recognized by the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2022, he received the Cross of Merit, in gold, of the Finnish Sports.
