Sakon Yamamoto navigated a decade of international motorsport before transitioning into a career in Japanese politics. Born in 1982 in Toyohashi, he advanced from the Suzuka Circuit Racing School in 1994 to hold professional driving positions with multiple Formula One teams between 2006 and 2010, eventually serving as a member of the House of Representatives of Japan from 2021 to 2024.
Early Racing Progression
Yamamoto began his formal racing development in 1994 at the Suzuka Circuit Racing School. He progressed through the ranks of karting and junior categories to earn a role as a test and third driver for the Jordan Formula One team during the 2005 season, specifically covering duties during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

In 2006, Yamamoto joined Super Aguri as a test and third driver. His debut at the German Grand Prix was marked by early mechanical failures. During his tenure, he experienced significant challenges, including a collision with a team mechanic at the 2010 Italian Grand Prix while driving for Hispania Racing. His final appearances in Formula One included stints with Spyker in 2007 and a reserve driver role with Marussia Virgin Racing in 2011.
GP2 Series and Formula E
Beyond his primary Formula One obligations, Yamamoto competed in the GP2 Series for BCN Competicion in 2007. In 2008, he joined the ART Grand Prix team, where he secured fourth place in the sprint race at the Hungaroring. During the 2008–2009 GP2 Asia Series, he achieved a podium finish in Shanghai. His open-wheel activity continued into Formula E, where he participated in the 2015 London ePrix for Amlin Aguri.
Political Service
In 2021, Yamamoto entered public service as a member of the House of Representatives of Japan, representing Tōkai PR. He maintained this legislative position until 2024, operating as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. This transition followed years of motorsport involvement, including a 2008 appointment as a test driver for the Renault F1 Team.
