Early Career and Domestic Success
Born in Sapporo in 1990, Kumagai pursued professional football goals throughout her elementary school years. Following her graduation from high school, she joined Urawa Reds in 2009. That same year, the club captured the Nadeshiko League championship. Her domestic experience provided a foundation before she transitioned to the international stage in 2011 by signing with FFC Frankfurt in the German Frauen-Bundesliga.

In June 2013, Kumagai moved to the French club Olympique Lyonnais. Over eight seasons, she made more than 240 appearances and contributed to 19 trophy wins. Her tenure included seven Division 1 Féminine titles, six Coupe de France titles, and five UEFA Women's Champions League victories. She achieved continental trebles in the 2015–16, 2016–17, 2018–19, and 2019–20 seasons. In the 2016 UEFA Champions League Final, she earned player-of-the-match honors and converted the winning penalty.
International Service and European Stints
Kumagai debuted for Japan in 2008 at age 17. She has since surpassed 100 caps, ranking among the top three most-capped Japanese female players. She captained the national squad starting in January 2017. After leaving Lyon in 2021, she joined Bayern Munich, winning a league title in 2022–23, followed by a successful stint at AS Roma where she secured Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana titles. She currently plays for West Ham United.
