Early Background and Training
Born in 1971 in Flushing, Queens, DeWitt is the daughter of Rosemarie and Kenny DeWitt. She is the granddaughter of former World Heavyweight Champion James J. Braddock, and she appeared as Sara Wilson in the film Cinderella Man, which chronicled his life. During her adolescence, she resided in Hanover Township, New Jersey. In addition to her studies at Hofstra University, where she joined Alpha Phi, she received professional acting instruction at The Actors Center in New York.

DeWitt entered the television industry in 2006, playing Emily Lehman in the Fox series Standoff, where she co-starred with Ron Livingston. She also held a role on the Showtime comedy United States of Tara. Her theatrical background includes numerous off-Broadway credits, such as performances in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea at the Second Stage Theatre and The Butter and Egg Man at the Atlantic Theater Company. She earned an Obie Award as part of the cast of the play Small Tragedy and appeared in the MCC Theater production of Family Week in 2010.
Film Career
Following her success in Rachel Getting Married, DeWitt appeared in various independent and mainstream productions. Her filmography includes roles in Men, Women, & Children, Kill the Messenger, Promised Land, and Your Sister's Sister. She played Laura Wilder in the 2016 musical La La Land and appeared in the 2015 remake of Poltergeist. More recent credits include the indie-thriller Sweet Virginia and the 2018 film Arizona. In 2024, she portrayed Diane Brooks in the Disney+ film Out of My Mind.
Personal Life
DeWitt was married to actor Chris Messina between 1995 and 2006. On November 2, 2009, she married actor Ron Livingston in San Francisco. The couple adopted an infant daughter in 2013 and a second infant daughter in 2015.
