Ross Brawn

Ross Brawn entered the motorsport industry in 1976 as a milling machine operator at March Engineering. This initial role launched a career spanning decades, during which he served as a technical director and executive across several prominent Formula One teams, ultimately overseeing teams that secured sixteen world championships in both driver and constructor categories.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1954 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Brawn attended Reading School after his family relocated to Berkshire. In 1971, he secured an apprenticeship at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in Harwell, qualifying as an instrument mechanic. He pursued further education through an HNC in Mechanical Engineering while working for the Authority. His transition into racing began in 1978 when he joined Frank Williams' team as a machinist, later progressing into research and development roles.

Technical Leadership at Benetton

Brawn became the technical director for the Benetton Formula One team in 1991. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in team organization and race strategy, collaborating with Rory Byrne. These efforts helped secure the World Constructors' Championship in 1995 and consecutive World Drivers' Championships for Michael Schumacher in 1994 and 1995.

Formation of Brawn GP

After a stint as team principal at Honda in 2008, Brawn executed a management buyout of the team in March 2009. By November 2009, Mercedes-Benz acquired an interest in the team, eventually assuming full ownership by 2011. Brawn remained team principal until his retirement from the sport in February 2014.
