Robin Shou, born in Hong Kong in 1960, built a dual career as an international martial arts competitor and a prominent actor in both the Hong Kong and American film industries. After establishing himself as a stunt performer and action star in Asia, he transitioned to Hollywood, finding widespread recognition in high-profile video game adaptations.
Early Athletic Career
Before his transition to film, Shou developed his skills as a martial artist during his university years, inspired by the film Shaolin Temple. He reached an elite level in competitive martial arts, earning the title of International Forms Champion in 1982 and 1983. He also secured multiple gold and silver medals at various competitions within China and earned recognition as a traditional forms Grand Champion in California.

Shou participated in approximately 40 movies during his initial period in Hong Kong cinema. His career as an actor and stuntman in the region flourished during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Notable work from this stage of his career includes appearances in Tiger Cage 2 and Fatal Termination. His American television debut occurred in 1990, where he acted alongside Melissa Gilbert in the drama Forbidden Nights.
Hollywood and Video Game Adaptations
In 1994, Shou relocated to Los Angeles, moving permanently into the American film market. He is most frequently recognized for his portrayal of Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat film series, starring in the 1995 original and the 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation. His connection to action-focused cinema continued with a role in the 1997 comedy Beverly Hills Ninja, opposite Chris Farley. He also played Gen in the 2009 production Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and portrayed 14K throughout the Death Race film series from 2008 to 2013. Beyond acting, he provided physical training for Milla Jovovich for her work in the Resident Evil series.
