Lineage and Early Life
Born Marie Wilhelmine Friederike on 21 January 1796 in Hanau, she was the second daughter of Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel and Princess Caroline of Nassau-Usingen. Her heritage connected her directly to the British monarchy as a great-granddaughter of George II. Her family status shifted in 1803 when the title held by her uncle was elevated to Elector of Hesse, reflecting the changing hierarchy of the Hesse dynasty.

On 12 August 1817, she married George, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, in Kassel. The couple produced four children: Duchess Luise, Frederick William, Duchess Caroline, and Duke Georg August. Following the death of her husband on 6 September 1860, she transitioned into a period of widowhood, for which she had previously prepared by arranging the construction of the Marienpalais residence in Neustrelitz.
Cultural and Social Engagement
Beyond her artistic endeavors, she occupied her later years with social and charitable commitments. During the Austro-Prussian War, she organized relief efforts for injured soldiers within Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1876, she lost two of her children, Duchess Caroline and Duke Georg, within a short timeframe. Following these losses, she took over the patronage of the Carolinestift hospital and commissioned a memorial church at Remplin in 1878.
Final Years
Marie passed away at 6:15 am on 30 December 1880 in Neustrelitz. Her funeral took place on 7 January 1881. She was interred beside her husband within the family crypt of the Johanniterkirche in Mirow.
