Princess of Greece and Denmark (1942–2026)

The youngest child of King Paul of Greece and Queen Frederica, Irene of Greece and Denmark entered the world in 1942 at Cape Town while her parents lived in exile. Her life encompassed a transition from royal status to professional musicianship, extended academic study in India, and a long residency in Spain before her death in Madrid in 2026.

Early Life and Education

Born on 11 May 1942, she grew up amidst the shifting fortunes of the Greek monarchy. After spending her earliest years in South Africa and Egypt, she returned to Greece in 1946. Her formal education included time at the Arsakion school in Athens and the Schule Schloss Salem in Germany. Following the death of her father, King Paul, in 1964, she served as heiress presumptive to the Greek throne until the birth of her niece, Princess Alexia.

Musical Career

In 1962, she began formal piano training under the guidance of concert pianist Gina Bachauer. She achieved professional success, performing extensively during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Notable engagements included a performance of Bach’s Concerto for Two Pianos at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1969 and a 1971 benefit concert for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, which generated approximately $100,000 for the organization.

Philosophical Pursuits in India

Following the collapse of the Greek monarchy and her subsequent departure from Greece, she relocated to India. There, she immersed herself in the study of Hindu philosophy and Advaita Vedanta at the University of Madras under Professor T. M. P. Mahadevan. Her time in the region, during which she studied Sanskrit, deeply influenced her personal philosophy and future philanthropic endeavors.

Humanitarian Work and Later Years

In 1986, she founded the organization Mundo en Armonía, serving as president until 2023. Her humanitarian projects included the 1984 initiative to transport hundreds of surplus European cows to India to prevent slaughter and provide milk to impoverished communities. From 1981 onward, she resided in Madrid at the Palace of Zarzuela with her sister, Queen Sofía. She renounced her Greek citizenship in 2018 to become a Spanish national.
